The Dutch Sakai Community is an informal cooperation between schools, universities and commercial partners. Our goal is to inform organizations in the Netherlands and Belgium about Sakai and its potential and to seek cooperation in working on specific projects (e.g. the translation of Sakai in Dutch). We organize several meetings a year to exchange experiences and best practices.

Another important goal for the Dutch Sakai community is cooperation in the European context. The European Union has a strong innovation agenda for e-society and e-citizenship. Education and lifelong learning play a major in this vision. We seek to position and promote Sakai within this agenda.

Whereas in other countries the uptake of Sakai is predominantly within Higher Education, this is not the case in The Netherlands. In The Netherlands, the University of Amsterdam is the only university that is actively using Sakai. The Dutch HE market is primarily using Blackboard. All the other implementations of Sakai are in the realm of further and vocational education (more than 15 schools) and in professional training and education (e.g. a department of Elsevier is using Sakai).
Latest information on Dutch Sakai developments A website (http://www.sakai.nl) and a blog (http://sakai-nl.blogspot.com) are our ways to make ourselves known to the world. At present most information is available in Dutch only, but we are working to translate most information into English. On the website we collect information from all the Dutch (& Belgian) organization that are working with (or have a sincere interest in) Sakai. Best practices, case studies and training materials will be available soon through the website.  Please contact Frank Benneker (frank.benneker@uva.nl) if you need more information.
